How to Import Bank Statements into Sage

To import a bank statement into Sage, convert the statement PDF to a CSV with Date, Description, and Amount columns, then use Sage's bank feed / statement import to upload the CSV and map the columns. Sage brings the transactions in so you can match and reconcile them against the ledger.

What Sage needs

Sage imports bank transactions from a CSV with a Date column, a Description/Reference column, and an Amount column (signed, or split into debit and credit). Sage products can be particular about date formats, so a converter that outputs consistent dates saves a round of cleanup.

The fast path

Convert the statement PDF to a categorized CSV, then import it into Sage. Because the converter produces consistent dates and signed amounts, the import maps cleanly and the transactions come in ready to match against invoices, bills, and nominal codes.

Step by step

  1. Convert the statement. Upload the PDF statement and download the categorized CSV.
  2. Open the bank import. In Sage, open the bank account and choose to import a statement / CSV.
  3. Map the columns. Map Date, Description, and Amount to the CSV columns, then import.
  4. Match and reconcile. Match the transactions to records and reconcile the account.

FAQ

Can Sage import a PDF bank statement?

No. Sage imports CSV (and formats like OFX/QIF depending on the product), not PDFs. Convert the PDF to CSV first.
